History & Ethics of Planned Ferrethood Ferretry

TaraI am Tara Seidner and I am the founder of Planned Ferrethood Ferretry (PFH).I have been a ferret owner since 1995, and I have been the shelter director for the Pennsylvania Ferret Rescue Association of Westmoreland County since 1997.

In 2000, I made the decision to begin breeding, to do my part to contribute to improving the health, temperament, and genetics of ferrets. I did not take the foray into breeding lightly. Prior to beginning my breeding program, I mentored under more experienced breeders to learn all that I could and to ensure that I was well-prepared for the complexities of breeding. I am active in the show, rescue, and breeding communities and I continually strive to further my own education in all aspects of ferret ownership.

The main goal of my breeding program is to produce healthy, well-tempered pet ferrets. I only place my ferrets on pet contract. It is not my goal to produce more ferrets that will go on to produce even more ferrets. I strive to bring into the world healthy, well-adjusted companions that follow ideal form and have high intelligence and problem-solving skills.

Breeding/show ferrets are all tested each year for Aleutian Disease Virus (ADV) and all the ferrets in our home are ADV negative (in-lab tests with United's CEP and Avecon's ELISA with saliva).

If you are new to ferrets and interested in purchasing a kit from PFH, please make sure you have read the book, "Ferrets for Dummies" by Kim Schilling (available from retailars such as Amazon, and Barnes & Noble) and have thoroughly researched the links available on the Resources & Links page. Even experienced owners would benefit from Ferrets For Dummies as well the other books & resources listed on that page - please take the time to check them out.
